Philanthropy Impact’s advocacy is designed to ensure the voice of advisory firms and their private clients are heard among policy makers and in government.
We have established a Public Affairs Committee, as a standing committee of our Board, composed of professional advisers who are passionate about making philanthropy and social investment easier and more accessible for their clients.
We have had extensive activities in this area with various government departments (Treasury, HMRC, Cabinet Office) and with the charity sector as part of our collaborative efforts.

Ceris advises UK and international philanthropists on planning their charitable giving strategy including the availability of tax reliefs and the requirements for cross border giving. Ceris advises charity trustees on constitutional, governance and taxation issues, on their powers and duties as charity trustees and on the increased risks and responsibilities posed by the increasing scrutiny of charities by regulators and the changing attitudes in today's society towards charities and philanthropy.
Ceris is a trustee of Crimestoppers Trust, National Philanthropic Trust -Transatlantic and is chair of the board of trustees of National Philanthropic Trust - UK.
Ceris contributes to press articles on philanthropy and gives talks on charity matters to private banks and other professional organisations. She is a member of the Charity Law Association and STEP and is secretary of the STEP Charity Special Interest Group.
Anna is CEO and Co-Founder of Prism the Gift Fund, a Donor Advised Fund and UK registered charity, established in 2005 to increase charitable funds into the sector. Previously, she worked in the high-tech industry and set up the Yazam EU office as Director of Investor Relations. Anna set up and ran the British arm of a USA based charity, the New Israel Fund. Anna also acts as a trustee and advisor for several charities. She is the director and shareholder of the financial services company Regent Capital that specialises in investment products/services to UK-based HNW investors.

Nandu Patel is Head of Charities and Asset Consultant Relationships for Barclays Private Bank in the UK. Based in London, Nandu will drive the Charities, Not-For-Profit and Asset Consultant proposition and is responsible for building, managing and growing relationships with asset consultants as well as charities and not-for-profits. Based in London, he reports to Lisa Francis, Head of the UK and Crown Dependencies, Barclays Private Bank.
Nandu has over 34 years’ experience in financial services and wealth management and joins Barclays from Rothschild & Co where he spent 10 years, most recently as UK Head of Charities. Additional experience includes a 20-year stint with Morgan Stanley, where he worked with non-resident Indian, UK and European private clients, small sized money managers and UK charities.
Nandu is a trustee of a UK registered charity and has recently been appointed to the Board of Philanthropy Impact UK as well as to the investment committee of the Royal College of Music.

James Maloney is a partner at Farrer & Co. He advises charities and the philanthropists who fund and work with them. He has particular experience on advising on the legal aspects of structuring philanthropic giving. He advises individuals and families on the formation of charities and alternatives, on donor tax reliefs, on charity governance, on regulatory requirements and on complex cross-border issues. James currently serves as the deputy chair of the STEP Philanthropy Advisors Global SIG Steering Committee. He lectures on charity law and charity tax law at Bayes Business School (formerly Cass Business School) and regularly writes and speaks on legal issues relating to philanthropy.
Simon has lectured on philanthropy, governance, charity trusteeship and charities in the context of tax-planning. He is also actively involved in the promotion of living legacies in connection with Philanthropy Impact.
He has acted for families with heritage assets and helped them to plan for a sustainable future.
Simon has advised trustees with holdings in overseas companies in the context of major reorganisations, entailing dealings with firms in multiple jurisdictions.
He includes as part of the philanthropy offering creating musical instrument syndicates.
John Canady is CEO of National Philanthropic Trust UK. He specializes in donor-advised funds for individuals and families around the world who wish to base their philanthropy from the UK. He was awarded the Philanthropy Advisor of the Year at the Spear’s Wealth Management Awards in 2018. He is a frequent commentator on global philanthropy and donor-advised funds and has appeared in the Financial Times, CNN Money, and Harvard Business Review. Mr. Canady is based in London.
Richard is of counsel in the private client and tax team. He advises on US and international tax and trust and estate planning, with clients based in Europe and the US. He specialises in US tax strategies for individuals, international trusts and closely held business structures. Richard devotes a significant part of his practice to cross-border philanthropy and pioneered the use of dual qualified charitable structures.
Richard was educated at University College London and qualified as a solicitor before moving to the US and attending the University of Pennsylvania Law School and has practiced in Washington DC and London. He is admitted as a solicitor in England, as a member of The District of Columbia and US Tax Court Bars.
Pippa is a partner in the charity and social business team at Russell-Cooke. She combines extensive general experience advising charities and social enterprises with a particular focus on charitable giving for high profile individuals, corporate foundations and family foundations. As well as advising charities and social enterprises on issues including corporate structure, governance issues and fundraising, she also sits in Russell-Cooke’s cross-practice Family Office service.
In addition to sitting on the Public Affairs Committee of Philanthropy Impact, Pippa is also a trustee of the charity FoodCycle, whose mission is to nourish the hungry and lonely in our communities with delicious meals and great conversation, using food which would otherwise go to waste.
Clive is a Senior Associate in Stone King’s Charity & Social Enterprise team, advising charities, social enterprises, purpose-led businesses and philanthropists on a wide range of issues. He is a member of Stone King’s specialist Social Finance and International & Cross-Border teams, and a member of the Charity Law Association. Clive also helps organise the Young Charity Professionals Group, an initiative aimed at bringing together the future leaders of the charity sector, which was founded by Stone King and three other leading professional services providers.
Prior to joining the firm, Clive worked in-house for a public-private Swiss-law foundation established by the World Health Organisation to develop innovative financing solutions for global health issues
Sarah has 19 years’ experience in private client tax and specialises in dealing with high net worth individuals and their onshore and offshore structures. She is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Taxation and is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (TEP). Sarah is also a qualified Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA). Sarah trained with KPMG where she became involved in advising UK based wealthy families, providing income, capital gains and inheritance tax advice to individual family members and their UK Trusts. She later moved to the Channel Islands where she advised on UK tax issues for offshore trustees, UK residents, non-UK domiciliaries and non-UK resident individuals with assets or structures in the UK.
Victoria joined Coutts in 2020 and is an Adviser in the Coutts Institute, supporting UHNW clients and their families as they consider the meaning and purpose of their wealth. She works to ensure their wealth supports their family values, that they are giving effectively and intelligently to the causes they care about, and helps them have structured and positive conversations about the importance of wealth succession. She brings considerable experience of working as an advisor to clients, charities, social enterprises and Government around donations and strategic funding, most recently having worked for the UK’s largest network of philanthropy-driven foundations.
Jonathan advises on a wide variety of commercial and constitutional issues affecting charities and is the first point of contact for many charity chief executives. He has assisted a number of charities with Charity Commission schemes and other regulatory issues relating to their activities. He has considerable expertise in a number of specialised areas including NHS charity regulation, impact investment and has worked with charities of all shapes and sizes in improving their governance systems and developing their legal frameworks. Jonathan has also built up a significant practice advising on fundraising.
Jonathan has a particular expertise in advising charities which operate internationally, in particular in helping overseas charities develop their franchise within the UK or UK charities with their cross border activities, often by a subsidiary or dual qualified charity.
Jonathan is individually ranked as a Band 1 charities lawyer in Chambers and Partners UK 2020.
Clarissa Lyons is a Senior Associate at Bates Wells. She works with a broad range of charities, individuals and corporates on legal and commercial issues including governance, structuring and charity registrations and formations. She has a particular interest in philanthropy, having worked previously within private client teams at major city law firms, and specialises in advising high profile individuals, families and corporates on their giving and ongoing philanthropic endeavours. Clarissa also has particular experience of advising donor advised funds.
